Granadir

Granadir or Grenadier is the most comforting and tasty meal that can be made with pantry staples! This is a quick and easy meal that is vegan too!
Many times I have made this version of pasta. You make a meal with what you have on hand. Onion and potato mixed with cooked grains or pasta or even stuffed in a sandwich makes an amazing meal. For an easy weeknight meal, this would be a great option. I would add the herbs I have on hand, or peas too! Little did I know that this was a common peasant food in Slovakia!

We are traveling virtually to Slovakia this month in our #EatTheWorld challenge group. We explore the cuisines of a chosen country, and we share a recipe from the country on the 10th of the next month. This is an amazing way to have a better understanding of the traditions and culture of a country.  Click here to find out how to join and have fun exploring a country a month in the kitchen with us!

Slovakia, the Slovak Republic is a landlocked country in Europe. It is surrounded by Poland to the north, Ukraine to the east, Hungary to the south, Austria to the southwest, and the Czech Republic to the northwest. The cuisine of Slovak is heavily influenced by its neighboring countries, especially Austria and Czech. As a part of my exploration, I tried and enjoyed a couple of dishes from this country. We loved the garlic and potato soup too.

This easy recipe is so easy and can be tweaked as you wish. Any leftover potatoes or pasta can be used in this amazing recipe. This is a great way to turn the leftovers into an amazing meal. This meal is just like having potato curry mixed with pasta. This is so popular as potato pasta in our home. Adjust the cayenne or paprika according to your taste preference.

I followed my recipe from here and here. In fact, this recipe would be an average of these two. I have made using oil, butter can also be used. Some recipes call for cooking the potatoes along with sautéed onion, like how we do our traditional potato curry. If you are in time crunch, boiled potatoes can be added too, just like in this recipe. This recipe is so forgiving that it allows variations without compromise on comfort.

Ingredients
Serves 2 to 3

Onion - 1 cup, diced
Potatoes - 4 to 5, smaller size, cooked
Salt - 1 and 1/4 tsp plus 2 tsp
Cayenne - 2and 1/2 tsp
Pasta - 200g
Water to cook pasta
Oil - 4 tbsp

Method

Cook the potatoes, and peel and chop them to half inch chunks.

In the meantime, cook pasta according to package directions and set aside.

Heat oil in a pan over medium flame. Add the onions and sauté for 3-4 minutes until they turn translucent. Add the chopped potatoes, salt and cayenne, cook for another 3 minutes.

Add the cooked pasta, combine well and sauté for 3 more minutes.

Serve hot or warm.
