Kheer aka payasam is an integral part of all our festivals. Kheer traditionally can be made with rice, (other grain are used off late), dals (with or without rice), vermicelli, almonds, or sago with milk and sweetened with sugar or jaggery. This is the recipe for slow cooked sago kheer. Sago or the white tapioca pearls are called as sabudana or javvarisi.
Slow cooker does all the work. Just add everything and set it on low. At the end do the finishing touches. Now that's a winner! It is now SO easy tomake this any quantities to entertain a big crowd. Just double or triple the recipe as needed.
For vegan option use oil instead of ghee. Milk is used and the pearls cook in milk-water mixture. I wouldn't suggest using coconut milk in a similar way of slow cooking, as it may curdle over prolonged cooking. Cook the pearls in water and at the end mix in coconut milk to make vegan version. In that case add sugar to sweeten.
This slow cooker version helps you fix other things while it is getting ready. If you are short of time, try this amazing Rice Kheer in Instant Pot. Veggies and fruits can also be used to make kheer. Try this Bottlegourd/Opo Kheer which one of the best way to use this veggie. Traditional Vermicelli Kheer and Sorghum Vermicelli Kheer are crowd pleasing too!
This week, I shared Slow Cooker Gingerbread Oats with perfact warming spices for an amazing breakfast, and this Slow Cooker Rajma curry to go with lunch or dinner. This slow cooker sago kheer is a perfect dessert to go with the meal and for any special occasions too!
